The following tweet from Dish Network entered my Twitter stream this morning

Did you see it? O’Reilly dubbed us Patriots on The Factor last night for our new commercial!: http://bit.ly/4KW3xs

I have been a long time Dish Network subscriber and I was peeved when I saw this and watched the video. Fox’s Bill O’Reilly has been popping off about the supposed “war on Christmas” for the past several years. His argument is that too many people are using the word Holidays instead of Christmas thus degrading the traditionally Christian holiday. Personally I think this artificial controversy is ridiculous. There is no “war” on Christmas and if anything has been lost of the religious basis of the season, it was lost a long time ago mostly to over consumerism and not because of any deliberate effort.

Dish Network has the right to make any kind of commercial it wants and I’m not bothered in the least that they say Merry Christmas in the spot. But Bill O’Reilly holding them up as some kind of heroes and worse than that, Dish Network glomming onto that is what pisses me off. As I said, I’m a long time Disk Network customer and I also happen to be Jewish. While I don’t mind the spot itself, Dish Network had better watch where they step and who they choose to affiliate with. I’m sure Dish has many customers who are not Christian and I feel like they just slapped them all in the face.

I’m a romantic about certain things, like drive-in movies and train travel. It’s been sad to see the demise of US train travel. We have fallen so far behind Europe and Japan in modern train travel. Amtrak can still get you where you’re going, but it’s painfully slow and surprisingly expensive. I am encouraged by the Obama administration putting some money and thought behind modernizing train travel in this country. Modern trains are cleaner, fast and a more elegant way to travel.

Being a west coaster, I would love to see a fast train running from Seattle to San Diego. Of course we need a cross country route and several east coast runs. Unfortunately this would cost an incredible amount of money and Obama’s proposed 8 billion is barley a drop in the bucket. Maybe a private company should be encouraged to do it but with the costs involved it could take a very long time just to make your money back so maybe a government/private sector partnership. The Infrastructurist website has a great article on how passenger rail could be saved. Whichever, Amtrak is basically broke and is a broken system. I would hate to see train travel go away so I hope against hope someone can spur a great revival in train travel.

Conservative commentators, desperate to catch President Obama in something, anything, have attacked him for paying attention to his family. Not something I would expect from Republicans.

Several weeks ago, Obama took his wife on a “date” to New York for dinner and a show. It’s something he promised he would to for her when the election was over. Conservatives tried to get themselves into a tizzy over this, saying it cost too much taxpayer money and that he should be focusing on the problems of the nation. After all the crazy money the government spends on meaningless crap, we’re supposed to start worrying about a trip to New York? After the President spent time in France for D-Day, he took the entire family to Paris. Again, why is Obama sightseeing in Paris?

If this is the biggest complaint people can find about Obama, well, that’s pretty pathetic. But here is the bigger thing. These are things Obama is doing for is family. Taking his wife out to New York and letting his kids experience a bit of Paris is fantastic. We should be lauding him for taking such good care of his family while holding down the most difficult job in the world. It’s a great example for all of us that no matter how hard you are working, no matter how busy you are, there is always time for your family, for your wife.

Michael Steele, newly minted RNC chairman says he is planning an “off the hook” public relations campaign and will translate the GOP image into “urban-suburban hip-hop settings”. Ever since Barack Obama made black hip in the white house, republicans figure they’ll follow right along. Just like a copy-cat Hollywood movie, this is destined for failure. For one thing, virtually every legit hip-hop artist is already in the Obama camp and for another thing this won’t jibe to well with Sarah Palin’s aspirations. Sorry, but no matter how you cut it, girl ain’t fly.

I was watching back the video of myself in The Bird and really didn’t like what I saw. You see yourself in the mirror each day, but on a day by day basis it’s hard to notice changes. Sometimes viewing yourself from outside, like on video, gives you a completely different perspective. I look fat.

I also know I am fat because I know my weight is at least 10lbs over what I should be. Not as bad as some people, but we all have our own challenges. I’ve been thinking about going back to the gym for awhile now. Thinking. Thinking doesn’t take the pounds off. If only.

And so once again I declare, I will get to the gym on a regular basis. Seriously.
