Heroes the Most Pirated TV Show

Heroes (TV series)

This news, that Heroes is the most pirated television show, is very disappointing to me for many reasons. It violates my personal primary rule for downloading. I will only download content if I cannot legitimately find it online for a fair price. I am happy to pay for content and/or watch ads and I do so all the time via iTunes and Hulu.com. If you do not make your content available to me online I feel like I am forced to get it another way. I guess I held out hope that many people felt this way. But Heroes is available on Hulu as well as NBC.com. In fact, I would argue it’s a hell of a lot easier to watch shows this way than try to download them via BitTorrent.

Those of us that argue for a digital future need to understand and respect that some kind of business model must follow. Likely, it will not be the same model that exists today, but producing television costs money and many people need to be compensated. Either the audience needs to pay for the content outright or watch some kind of advertising. I don’t know nor care at this point what model wins out but what I do know is that if shows are pirated and people are not compensated, the digital future will not happen. When networks make shows available online as NBC, ABC and others have done we need to reward that behavior as much as possible. If we can work with the entertainment industry and stop spitting in their faces, together we can carve out a future where everyone wins.

ADD Moment

Here I am writing a blog post and at the same time I am watching live cnn.com video from the Oscars and viewing my tweets in TweetDeck, all on the same screen at the same time. No wonder ADD is a problem in this country.

Deathly Hallows – Done

I finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows today. Now my wife and I can finally talk about it. She finished the book in about 12 hours. Good book, I did like it, but the Half Blood Prince is still my favorite. Congrats to JK on what is now the fastest selling book ever.

New Crowded House

Oh my, there’s a new Crowded House album out and it’s great! Sometimes when bands of old come back for another try at past glory the results are less than spectacular. Not the cases here; Crowded House sound as good as ever.

Jericho May Be Saved

In the last Some Dude From California I talked about the cancellation of Jericho on CBS. I said they really owe it to the fans to finish the story somehow. Well, after a massive Internet campaign, CBS is trying to figure out how they can bring the show back mid season for a 6 episode run to complete the story. I due hope this happens, cross your fingers.

End of the line for BSG

It’s sad but true; reports out today that the fourth season of the new Battlestar Galactica will be the end of the show. I do like the fact that the smart serialized dramas are understanding they need to end the story and not carry on and on until nobody can bear it anymore, ala The X Files. Lost has also announced it’s end date, but that’s three more seasons. So, a hole will be left in our geek hearts but it will be nice to see the show go out on top and with something left in the tank. Bravo Sci-Fi channel, thanks for a great series.
