Falling Off The Wagon

BurgerAs some of you may remember, I went on the Lindora low carb weight loss program some months ago. I did, in fact, loose 18lbs. I was doing great; than the program ended. I never really completed the program properly as I missed my last two weeks of “metabolic adjustment”. It’s all my fault, really, I was not committed enough to follow through with the long term maintenance routine. It’s not that I didn’t know what to do, I just didn’t do it. It’s been a hectic time, of course, with all the house drama; a convenient excuse.

So I’ve completely and totally fallen off the wagon. I’ve gained back probably five pounds and noticeable inches to my waist. This has really got to stop. It’s a matter of balancing wants and desires. I desire to keep my weight down, but I often want to eat a hamburger. Somewhere there is the right balance. Starting to exercise regularly like I used to, oh, that would help greatly as well.

I write this to update you on where I am and to let you know the struggle doesn’t end. Hopefully soon, we will get through the move to Portland transition and things can get back to normal, which will make it so much easier to get on track. That and I plan on getting a really good bike in Portland (it’s bike city after all). So many things are bike-able, I may get it a good deal more exercise getting around town. Portland does have all those great food carts though…..oh, boy.

Dead Dog Tired

My body hurts in so many places and I’m tired as tired can be. We’ve been working like crazy to get this house ready to put on the market for sale soon. Moving furniture, taking out trash and Goodwill, and generally moving nonstop for three days. My lower back is the real problem area and I have always had problems with the lower back. We are still not done, another few days of this and hopefully Monday we will be ready for photos. This is the first real concrete step on our mission to get to Portland next summer.

With all the physical activity you would think my weight would be doing well but we have not been able to do the Lindora thing very well at all. It’s just not even close to our regular routine and I am so wore out and busted, I have nothing left to fight the late night munchies, my ultimate downfall. I haven’t gained much, but I’m suck at 201. I really wanted to get below 200 with some room to spare and we only have one week left of weight loss. We need so badly to finish this house prep project and get back to as much of a normal life as possible.

I’ve never been to a chiropractor but I am seriously considering it when this is done. My body is wrecked. It makes me feel old. The body just does not take punishment as well when you’re over 40.

Lindora Update

Danish PasteriesSorry it’s been a long time since the last weight loss update. The news is good, very good in fact. After four weeks on Lindora I have lost a total of 17lbs and an inch and a half off my belly. This is an 8 week program so I have some more to go and I’m on track for my goal of 190.

It’s not been easy and there have been good days and challenging days. We are now on Christmas vacation away from home and thus on a hiatus from Lindora as well. I am trying to keep to the program as best as possible but the folks at Lindora said to not worry about loosing weight, just not to gain any. I haven’t stepped on a scale yet and I’m a little afraid to. We’ve not strayed greatly, but we have strayed. Let’s just say Solvang, CA is not a good place to go if you’re on a diet due to the abundance of Danish pastry treats .

The other big piece of news is that due to my weight loss I was able to stop taking the injectable insulin a few weeks back and I was able to cut another diabetes medicine in half. So far, even on this hiatus, my sugar is staying in line. I have also noticed several of my pants don’t fit right anymore due to my shrinking waist. That’s a very satisfying feeling.

After Christmas it’s back to the grindstone for the final push for 190. My ultimate goal is to stay below 200 for life. I started this adventure at 218lbs. So far, so good.

Lindora – Day 1

And so it begins. As you should know by now, I am starting the Lindora diet program today. For the first three days of this program, it’s a heavy protein based diet. At 7am I got to start with a chocolate shake which was quite nice actually. After I finish this blog post at 9am I will get some bbq nuts for a snack . So far, I feel fine and not hungry. But we’re only beginning, so by tomorrow I may be on the floor whining. No, I’ll be fine.

This diet is protein based in general. Very low carb and low fat. The doctor in charge thinks I should be off my insulin by the end of the first week and probably off one of my other diabetes meds a week later. That would be very cool and I’m looking forward to that. Overall, it’s expected I will loose around 20-25lbs in this 10 week program. That would put me comfortably under 200lbs which has always been my goal. So, here we go. It’s time for my snack.

Update: 9:00pm: Made it to the end of the day and it was quite an afternoon. I started to get a headache around noon and it increased rapidly. By 2 I needed some Advil and realized I had had enough water. I had my appointment at Lindora and they confirmed the drastic drop in carbs contributed to the headaches. They modified the menu for be, boosting the carbs to help out until I fully adjust. The good news is that I didn’t feel hungry so outside of the headache it was a decent day.

Overeating and Five Dollar Footlongs

funny pictures
Subway is a two faced advertising monster. On the one face they give us Jared, the slimed down, healthy eating role model for the world. Eat healthy, eat Subway. On the other face they are hitting hard on the five dollar footlong campaign. You think Jared got thin by eating footlong sandwiches? I think not. Eat healthy, or not.

It’s not just about less fat and less carb when loosing weight and getting fit. It’s also about portion control. That happens to be one of my biggest challenges so I know all about it. A footlong sandwich is just too much food for one person to eat at a single meal. Now maybe you’re splitting it with someone else or maybe you’re eating half for lunch and half tomorrow. If so, good for you. But Subway certainly doesn’t advertise it that way. Overeating and increased weight are real problems in this country and five dollar footlongs aren’t helping.

Get Your Drank On?

Jolt ColaBack when I was in college, I remember the giant billboards for Jolt Cola. It was the start of the crazy drinks, drinks with all kind of strange things in them promising all kinds of results. Jolt was simple. All the sugar and twice the caffeine. Over time things have evolved and Red Bull became the drink of the moment. I’m still not sure what they mean by Red Bull “gives you wings”. I’m getting old. I understand simple things like all the sugar, twice the caffeine.

Now it seems drinks that artificially jack you up are getting stale and the new kid on the block is a drink that relaxes you. They’re calling it Drank. I have to lay on you some choice quotes from their CEO Peter Bianchi.

“We wanted to give the people on the go something to drink during the day which would help them relax, calm down, and not have to keep an old bottle of gin in their drawer,”

What century is this guy living in? Gin in the drawer? Oh, but there’s more. Quoting directly from the Time article now.

The name Drank has roots in Houston’s hip-hop scene; “purple drank” is a slang term for an illegal concoction that mixes codeine syrup with soft drinks or alcohol.

Nice inspiration Mr. Bianchi. You even colored the can purple. But of course, no relation to the illegal drink. Mr. Bianchi adds.

“The word drank is celebratory slang,” he says. “The name of my product is hip and fun to say: ‘I’m going to get my drank on,’ ” Bianchi says, sounding quite un-hip

I think if any kid in the streets ever said I’m going to get my Drank on, they’d be shot. God help us all. Finally

“We wanted something fun, something that was a healthy alternative to people for using drugs and alcohol,”

Drop the crack pipe kids and grab yourself some Drank. So you see they’re doing us all a public service. If I soundDrank a bit extra sarcastic and annoyed, I am. I think all these kinds of drinks are terrible for you. No long term studies have been done and I think eventually we will see some real ill effects. Artificially pumping yourself up and down is just not healthy under any circumstance. I addition I have a personal gripe. My brother died from a heart attack when he was only 43. When we cleaned out his place we found lots of energy drinks. We think that he was obviously not feeling well, probably overly tired. Rather than go to a doctor or call someone, he tried to gain back his energy with these drinks. I’m not saying energy drinks gave him a heart attack but I am saying that these drinks tell people if they are feeling low they can get their wings with a little Red Bull. When you’re body is giving you a sign like your overly tired or not generally feeling well, you don’t need an energy drink. You don’t need ginseng. Call a fucking doctor for Gods sake.
