OoVoo Finds New Life On Facebook

oovooWhen it was first released, video chat company OoVoo thought it was going to be a better version of Skype. Indeed OoVoo does offer many features Skype does not, but OoVoo never had the gas to overcome market leader Skype.

Now OoVoo has released it’s video chat platform on Facebook and for the first time Facebook users have multi-user vido chat capability much the same as Google + hangouts. I think this could prove very popular and with Facebook’s massive user base, it’s a whole new life for OoVoo. Who needs to compete with Skype when the future may be video on social networks.

Disney Video Is A Winner

disney-video-betaFile under: Why did this take so long. Disney has released a portal site for kid-friendly video. Obviously, Disney itself has a huge wealth of content to draw from but they also include a nicely curated YouTube section. This alone could be a Godsend for parents who are worried about letting their kids loose on the unrestricted YouTube.

For young people nothing is hotter than video these days so this site makes so much sense for Disney. It’s a great example of a large brand using elements of the social net to great effect. The only thing I see missing are links to purchase the source content. The Disney Video site is a place I can see kids spending a lot of time on which keeps them connected and engaged with the brand.

Google Hangouts On Air Spells Trouble For Ustream

hangouts-on-airUntil now, Ustream..tv has been the king of online streaming video. The Ustream platform has been solid for years and, for the most part, devoid of serious challengers. Until now. Enter Google.

This week Google launched Hangouts On Air for all of it’s Google+ users. Hangouts are online video chats for the Google+ social network. Until now, Hangouts were limited to 10 participants and video chats were not recorded for later viewing. Hangouts On Air provides a true live broadcasting capability with virtually unlimited viewers and in addition, Hangouts are recorded and posted to YouTube for viewing later. This puts Hangouts on par with other broadcasting systems like Ustream and Justin.tv. Of course Ustream.tv has more features, a more mature platform and user base, but whenever a giant fish jumps into a small pond, it’s going to create big splash. Another big advantage for Google, Hangouts On Air are already connected to your growing social network on Google, whereas Ustream.tv does not have nearly the social network features.

What all this means for your business is video continues to grow in new and different ways. It’s a force you will not be able to avoid soon. What kind of video content could your business provide on these platforms?

OMG! A Podcast!

I’m calling it Check In #1 and it isn’t a new show or anything. I am, in fact, working on New Guy In Town as my personal podcast project and as you will hear in this little update, there have been some significant audio issues. That being said, I always reserve the right to post audio or video here. It’s my blog, and I’ll cry if I want to. So here you go with a little update/check in. Get it, clever name yes. Ok, enjoy.

New Media Setup

I don’t mean new media as in “new media” I am talking about a new setup for my podcast and video productions.

Nothing in my podcast hardware setup has been working right since the move. It’s one of the reasons there has been only one podcast since moving to Portland. Most of my equipment is pretty old now and is starting to get long in the tooth. After much thought, what I am doing is replacing my Yamaha mixer with a new Mackie mixer. I am taking the ART Tube preamp out of the equation all together. My DBX compressor/limiter might be bad as well as it’s doing very bad things when connected. I’m going to connect it differently with the new nmixer, so we’ll see if that helps. If not, I may add a new Presonus compressor. The computer interface and Heil pr40 microphone will remain the same.

For video,  have a great opportunity to use a green screen down in the basement. It’s just a matter of how I construct it. I am thinking of options now including purchasing one. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

And there you have it. So much new happening, including the new carpet going in for the basement and master bedroom. It will be much more cozy in the lab. Are labs supposed to be cozy? Well, mine is.
